(Dan Tri) – A senior Russian official warned that if the West guarantees Ukraine’s security, this could lead to a scenario where the bloc directly confronts Moscow.

Vice Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said on December 25 that Western security commitments to Kiev were `ineffective` but could pave the way for NATO to set up military bases in Kiev.

The security declaration, first adopted by members of the G7 group in July, promised military aid to Kiev, as well as frameworks to support the defense industrial base and share intelligence.

Mr. Medvedev also accused Kiev’s plan to persuade the EU to ensure security for Ukraine as a new attempt `to create an anti-Russian consensus`.

However, he said that the declaration of security guarantees for Ukraine `does not add any value because it is just a public statement and it has no effect`.

According to Mr. Medvedev, this document could pave the way for Ukraine to sign bilateral security agreements with Western countries, thereby leading to cooperation in weapons production, military training and other programs that can

He said that such an agreement could even cause some Western countries to establish military bases in Ukraine.

Mr. Medvedev warned that this could pave the way for a large-scale conflict between the NATO country and Russia.

`When Russia attacks such a base, and this will inevitably happen because the soldiers of that base come to Ukraine to fight with us, will NATO countries be ready for a collective response?`

Mr. Medvedev’s comments came after Mr. Andrey Sibiga, deputy chief of staff of the President of Ukraine, said that 6 EU members including Austria, Croatia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Malta still do not support security guarantees.

Earlier this month, Mr. Medvedev warned that the risk of conflict between Russia and NATO leading to World War III has never been greater than it is now.

`Never since the Cuban Missile Crisis has the threat of a direct clash between Russia and NATO that could lead to World War III been so real,` he wrote on Telegram.

Previously, US President Joe Biden warned that if Russia wins in Ukraine and continues to target a NATO ally, the US military will be forced to confront Russia.

This is not the first time Russian and US officials have warned about the risk of World War III or nuclear conflict.

Since the start of the military campaign in the neighboring country on February 24, Russian officials have repeatedly mentioned the country’s nuclear doctrine, which clearly states the conditions that allow Moscow to have the right to use force.

However, both Russia and the US affirm that a nuclear war is unwinnable and should never happen.
