Once again, Bayer Leverkusen successfully fought back to avoid a defeat but showed that Xabi Alonso’s coaching talent is very effective.

Last season, Alonso brought a miracle when he pulled Leverkusen from an extremely low position on the 2022/23 Bundesliga rankings to win tickets to the 2023/24 European Cup.

In the early morning of May 10, Leverkusen took one step closer to the great `treble` when coming back to hold a 2-2 draw against AS Roma in the semi-finals of the Europa League 2023/24.

Thanks to that, the German representative broke the old record belonging to Benfica – the Portuguese club that was unbeaten in 48 matches in the period 1963-1965.

The achievement is so terrible because it shows how great Leverkusen’s determination and desire are and that they have absolutely no limits. This is not the first time Leverkusen has made Germans proud even though he is not a citizen.

In the last 4/6 matches, we can only temporarily consider that (the remaining 2 matches they won 3 points), Leverkusen were in a chasing position and they succeeded in keeping at least 1 point for themselves.

According to statistics, Leverkusen reached the European Cup final for the third time in history, after the 1987/88 UEFA Cup final and the 2001/02 Champions League.

When will Alonso’s team lose?

Before this season, Leverkusen had only won two major titles in the club’s history, the UEFA Cup (predecessor of the Europa League) in 1988 and the German National Cup in 1993. But in Xabi Alonso’s second season, Leverkusen not only won for the first time.

They won the Bundesliga, ending Bayern’s dominance after 11 years and becoming the first team in the history of the tournament to go undefeated in the first 32 matches in a season.

Leverkusen’s success also forced dangerous rival Bayern Munich to wonder how to regain their position.

The last time Leverkusen failed was a 0-3 loss at Bochum in the closing round of the Bundesliga last season (May 27, 2023).
